One of the things I have loved about the series we are in is that it has given me a chance to read and re-read several of Erwin McManus’ books. Wide Awake was just as good as his other ones.
I read Wide Awake for my talk “Today is your Someday” as I thought through dreams, how to dream, why some of us capitalize on dreams, why others miss their dreams.
The book covers so many of the things that are needed to fully live life and grab a hold of everything in your life. Many of us as adults no longer know how to dream. As children we have a curiosity, we explore, but as we grow older we decide to stop dreaming, to stop discovering. Consequently, we live incredibly boring lives. We watch life happen on TV instead of actually participating in it.
McManus lays out that to find the future that is within us, we must: Dream, Discover, Expect, have Focus, be Creative, Enjoy life, and Invest in others. Those are just some of the highlights to imagining a new future of what could be.
I love the imagery of dreaming with our eyes wide open instead of just seeing dreams as something that happens when our eyes are closed.
Here are a few things that jumped out:
- Every human being is pre-great.
- Most of us don’t choose the worst life; we just don’t choose the best.
- Some spend their lives painting images that only remember the past. Their dreams are a memorial to what was. Others live in regret and dream only of what could have been. Their art is a tribute to a world that we can only envy. Still there are those who dream of a world that does not yet exist; of a world that must exist. They dream a future that must be created.
- When you begin to dream, you begin to explore.
- You were created by God to be a pioneer, to explore unkown places and have uncertain experiences because he created and designed you to solve whatever challenges and problems and obstacles you will face in that place.
If this series has had a profound effect on you, then you definitely want to pick up either Wide Awake or Chasing Daylight, or both.
